KCAI Student Interview: Parker H. Seydel
Parker H. Seydel
Age: 22 | Field of Study: Graphic Design
What were your honest thoughts when you heard about this project?
"I've known about this project since my freshman year and had a lot of anxiety when approaching my original drafts. Along the way, I learned to let go and focus on what I excel at and what excites me."
Who is your favorite artist that you listened to?
"Kandace Springs was the most contemporary out of whom I listened to and I really enjoyed her music but the Yellowjackets have a mellow-ness to their music that really embodies my assumptions of what jazz is. Both are extremely talented for different reasons and I believe I listened to the musicians equally as frequent."
What was your process for creating your posters (in terms that us non-graphic design students can understand)?
"I used my knowledge of 3D modeling software to "sculpt" different instruments that spoke to each artist. I then adjusted the lighting in the 3-dimensional scene that I had created to reflect how I thought of each artist. After tinkering with my typeface choices, I settled on "Righteous," which I then edited to give the illusion of depth within the poster. Combining these elements created a lively landscape of instruments which communicated the functionality of the objects, the emotional quality through color, and the explosive energy of jazz through motion."
Of your posters, which is your favorite?
"The Kurt Elling Quintet fits my grid system the best and has very vibrant colors. Kandace Springs was a close second."
Where are you hoping your career will go after KCAI?
